Officials Information
Participating as an official is the best way to support your swimmer!


Officials are dedicated club members who have completed officiating clinics offered by Swim Canada and Swim Alberta. Their commitment is absolutely essential to the success of our swim meets and plays a vital role in supporting our swimmers. Each official's role not only offers the chance to deepen your understanding of the sport's rules and regulations but also provides a unique opportunity to positively impact the swimmers' experience. Plus, you’ll enjoy the best view of the action right on deck!


Acronyms

SNC = Swimming Natation Canada or Swim Canada. SNC supports a vibrant community of over 75,000 competitive swimmers, along with numerous coaches, officials and volunteers across approximately 450 clubs nationwide.
REMS = SNC's national Registration and Event Management System (REMS) that includes all Canadian swim clubs, swimmers, coaches and officials. Powered by the SportLoMo platform, REMS was launched in September, 2024 and replaced the previous RTR platform (Registration, Tracking and Results), which was permanently shut down on August 13, 2024.
SportLoMo = The sports administration platform that created and provides support for SNC's Registration & Event Management System (REMS).
LMS = SNC's Learning Management System (LMS) or education system. Officials must log into their REMS officials account to access LMS.


Training as an Official

REMS Officials Account

To become an official, you must register as an official with Swim Canada's Registration and Events Management System (REMS).

Once registered, you will have your own officials account in REMS which you need to:

  • Access Swim Canada's Learning Management System (LMS) to complete officiating clinics and
  • Track your credentials and certifications.

LMS and Officiating Clinics

Officiating clinics are offered in LMS. To complete clinics:

  1. Activate your LMS account:
  2. Access/log into LMS:
    • Log in to your officials account in REMS to access Swim Canada's Learning Management System (LMS).
    • Please visit the SNC's LMS User Guide for Officials for help using LMS.
    • Please refer to Swim Canada's Officials Certification Pathway for the order of clinic completion.
    • For new officials, the first 2 mandatory clinics are the:
      1. Introduction to Swimming Officiating (Timer) clinic;
      2. Safety Marshal clinic.
  3. After completing an Officiating Clinic:
    • For ONLY the Introduction to Swimming Officiating (Timer) and the Safety Marshal clinics, you can sign up immediately to work independently at a Cascade hosted swim meet.
    • For any clinic, other than Introduction to Swimming Officiating (Timer) and the Safety Marshal, Cascade requires you to sign up & work a shadow shift in that new role.
    • Work in each officiating position over several swim meets to gain deck experience .

Shadow Shifts

  • NO SHADOW SHIFT REQUIRED FOR Introduction to Swimming Officiating (Timer) AND Safety Marshal.
  • Cascade's shadow shifts allow an official in a new officiating position to work alongside an experienced official, gaining valuable hands-on training.
  • Sign up for a shadow shift when signing up to work Cascade hosted swim meets.

Becoming a Certified Official

Deck Evaluations

Once you feel confident in an officiating position, you are expected to arrange your own deck evaluations. Here is some general information:

    • A deck evaluation is when a Referee evaluates you while you are working in an officiating position during a swim meet session.
    • Deck evaluations are required to become certified in an officiating position.
    • The specific number of evaluations needed may vary depending on the position.
    • Referees have the authority to initiate deck evaluations and can choose to evaluate officials during swim meet sessions.
    • Officials are responsible for printing & maintaining their Swim Alberta's Officials Certification Card.
    • It is expected that officials carry their certification card with them at all times while officiating at a swim meet.
    • Officials cannot be evaluated during a shadow shift, as they are not working independently in the officiating role.

    Deck Evaluation Procedure

    Officials are expected to initiate their own deck evaluations following the procedure below.​​​​​​​

    1. Before the start of the meet session:
      • Approach the session Referee to request an evaluation.
      • Please provide your certification card to the Referee.
    2. At the end of the meet session:
      • Please ensure the Referee signs your certification card.
    3. After the swim meet ends:

      • Please email Cascade's Officials Administrator with the following details:

        • Your name;
        • The login email of your REMS Officials account;
        • The officiating position in which you were evaluated;
        • Swim meet session details (meet name, session date, and time), and;
        • A photo of your certification card with the Referee's signature.
